Byron says nothing on the journey to the church, just keeps farting.

Frank Stewart drives the Volkswagen Transporter van, with the scientist beside him. In the back, the CCTV bloke accompanies his officers, who are unusually quiet.

The technical man, Tone, will keep his mouth shut. Frank knew him from his days on Vice.

The bus jumps around as the officer drives over potholes partially filled with icy water. He looks up at the overcast sky; too cold to rain, but maybe snow later. The forecast predicted long, cold spells with the temperature dropping to below freezing through the nights.

As they turn into Beech Common Road, upon which the church sits a mile along, Frank Stewart feels chills dance across his body. He inhales deeply and shakes his shoulders to warm himself. No time to be a pussy. He’s already given an outrageously vague briefing, lost half his team, and guaranteed at least two officers certain death. The one thing he has to give his team is strong leadership. This is his deal, and some of them expect to die. He will never have greater responsibility. He didn’t want them to die, but accepted that loss was inevitable. Those lost lives would be forever commemorated, like fallen soldiers. The world, the whole fucking world, would remember them.

It fills Frank Stewart with great pride to lead this team. Baz, Tom, Terry and Rhonda are legends, true warriors in every sense of the word. And it is testament to his character, his leadership, that they will follow him to this place.

‘Byron, do you need to shit?’ He looks at the terrified passenger. ‘You’re stinking out the minibus. It’s too cold to open the window.’

The scientists looks away, inhales jerkily, his trembling hands on his knees.

The detective closes his eyes. There’s a time when a man has to show a softer side. ‘Listen, Byron, in the back is four officers who can hit a can of coke fifty metres away with a bullet. They’ll be in the church watching from above. And Reverend Bush can see the killer. He’ll err tell us where he is and we’ll take him out.’

‘Yes, officer … that’s what you said.’

‘You’re really a glass half empty kind of bloke, aren’t you? A timer whiner.’

Byron rubs his hands up and down his legs. ‘How inconsiderate of me.’ He reaches forwards and turns up the heat.

D.I Stewart rolls the vehicle onto the dirt track. As he steps out, the ice crunches beneath his steel-toe-capped boots.

He leads the men into the church, introduces Byron to the reverend, and positions his officers on the balconies. Meanwhile, Tone, wires up the cameras.

Thirty minutes later, he walks over to the middle of the church where the super, reverend and Byron wait.

The scientist has laid down his sleeping bag between the pews, as instructed, and now sits beside it.

‘Looks comfortable,’ the detective says and then looks at the holy man. ‘Where will you sleep?’

The reverend eyes him cautiously. ‘I have a camper bed, since you’re concerned.’

Frank nods, aware of the sarcasm, and unwilling to touch on it.
